Where to Stay in Chelsea

Chelsea runs roughly from 14th to 30th Street on the west side. It is one of the most walkable parts of Manhattan and a strong choice for a second trip, or a first trip by travellers who would rather have a neighbourhood than a landmark.

The High Line and the galleries

The High Line runs along Chelsea's western edge, and the streets beneath it in the West 20s hold the densest concentration of contemporary art galleries in the world. Nearly all are free to enter. Chelsea Market, at the southern end, is a covered food hall in the old Nabisco factory and is worth an afternoon.

A real neighbourhood

Unlike much of Midtown, people live here. The streets have restaurants, bars and shops aimed at residents, and Chelsea has been central to New York's LGBTQ+ life for decades. Evenings are lively without being rowdy, apart from the Meatpacking District at the southern tip.

What you give up

You are twenty to thirty minutes from Times Square and the Museum Mile, so a first trip built around the classic sights will involve daily subway journeys. The far west blocks near Eleventh Avenue are a long walk from any train.

Fast answers

Questions UK travellers ask about Chelsea.

Is Chelsea good for a first New York trip?

It works if you are happy using the subway and want a neighbourhood rather than a tourist district. For a packed three-night first trip built around Broadway and Central Park, Midtown or NoMad will save you time each day.

How far is the High Line?

Most Chelsea hotels are five to fifteen minutes from an entrance. It runs from Gansevoort Street up to Hudson Yards, and walking its full length takes about forty-five minutes.
