Where to Stay in the East Village

The East Village runs east from Broadway to Avenue D, below 14th Street. It has been the city's counterculture quarter for sixty years and remains the best place in Manhattan to eat well for very little money.

Eating is the reason to be here

Sixth Street between First and Second Avenues is lined with Indian restaurants, St Marks Place holds a dense run of Japanese places, and there are Ukrainian diners that have been trading since the neighbourhood was Little Ukraine. Very little of it is expensive, which changes what a week in New York costs.

The nightlife is genuine

This is not a district of hotel bars. The East Village has dive bars, small music venues and places that stay open very late, and it is busy on weeknights as well as weekends. That is either the appeal or the reason to stay elsewhere.

The subway thins out going east

Astor Place and Third Avenue are well served, but the further east you go towards Avenues B, C and D, the longer the walk to a train. Check the distance to the nearest station before booking on price alone, particularly if you will be coming back late.

Fast answers

Questions UK travellers ask about East Village.

Is the East Village good for a first New York trip?

It is better on a second. The food and atmosphere are excellent, but you will travel to most of the first-trip landmarks and the subway links are less convenient than from Midtown.

How noisy is it at night?

Busy, particularly around St Marks Place and Avenue A at weekends. Hotels on the quieter cross streets are noticeably calmer than those on the avenues.
