Where to Stay in Hell's Kitchen

Hell's Kitchen sits immediately west of the theatre district, roughly from Eighth Avenue to the Hudson in the 40s and 50s. For a theatre trip it is frequently the smarter buy: you keep the walk to the shows and gain much better food for less money.

Restaurant Row and beyond

West 46th Street between Eighth and Ninth is Restaurant Row, built for pre-theatre dinners, but the better eating is on Ninth Avenue itself, which runs for blocks with independent restaurants from a dozen cuisines at prices Times Square cannot match.

How far west to go

This is the single most important decision here. Eighth and Ninth Avenue hotels are a five to ten-minute walk to the theatres. Tenth and Eleventh Avenue hotels are cheaper for a reason: you are looking at fifteen minutes or more to a subway, which matters after a late show or in January.

Practical for airports

Port Authority Bus Terminal at 42nd and Eighth runs the coaches to Newark, and the Lincoln Tunnel is close. If you are flying into Newark rather than JFK, this side of Midtown is meaningfully more convenient.

Getting around

Fast answers

Questions UK travellers ask about Hell's Kitchen.

Is Hell's Kitchen safe?

Yes. The name is historic and bears no relation to the area today, which is a busy residential and restaurant neighbourhood. The avenues are well lit and busy into the night; the far western blocks near the river are quieter.

How far is it to the theatres?

From Eighth or Ninth Avenue, five to ten minutes on foot. From Tenth or Eleventh, allow fifteen to twenty. Work that out before booking, because you will do the walk twice on show days.
