The G train does not go to Manhattan
This is the single most important thing to know. The G is the only subway line in the whole system that never enters Manhattan, so reaching Midtown means changing at Court Square or Metropolitan Avenue. It is perfectly workable, but it is not the ten-minute hop that Williamsburg's L offers.
The ferry is often the better route
The East River Ferry from India Street is frequently quicker, and considerably more pleasant, than the subway. It runs to Midtown and down to Wall Street, and it is one of the few forms of public transport in New York that people take for pleasure.
Little Poland and the waterfront
Manhattan Avenue still carries Polish bakeries, delis and restaurants from the neighbourhood's long Polish history, and prices there remain genuinely low. Transmitter Park and the waterfront give you the skyline view without the Williamsburg crowds.

Fast answers
Questions UK travellers ask about Greenpoint.
How long does it take to reach Midtown from Greenpoint?
Allow around thirty minutes by subway with a change, or roughly the same by ferry from India Street with a much better view. Neither is difficult, but it is longer than from Williamsburg.
Is Greenpoint worth it over Williamsburg?
For space and price, often yes, particularly for apartment-style rooms on a longer stay. Williamsburg wins clearly on transport and on having more going on in the evening.
