The history is worth your time
The Tenement Museum on Orchard Street preserves apartments as they were lived in by immigrant families, and its guided tours are among the best things to do in New York. Katz's Delicatessen on Houston Street has been trading since 1888. This is not a district that invented its own history recently.
Nights out
Orchard, Ludlow and Rivington Streets hold a dense concentration of bars and small restaurants, and the area runs late. It is livelier and scruffier than SoHo immediately west, which is precisely why many repeat visitors prefer it.
Thinner subway coverage
The Lower East Side is less well served than most of Manhattan. Delancey-Essex and Bowery cover the F, J, M and Z, but you may have a longer walk to a train than you expect, and getting to Midtown usually means a change.

Fast answers
Questions UK travellers ask about Lower East Side.
Is the Lower East Side a good first-trip base?
Not usually. It is a superb neighbourhood for eating and drinking, but the subway links to Midtown are less convenient than from most areas, which costs you time on a short trip.
Is the Tenement Museum worth booking ahead?
Yes. Tours are small and guided, and they sell out well in advance, particularly at weekends and in school holidays. Book before you travel rather than on the day.
