Where to Stay on Central Park South

Central Park South is the strip of 59th Street facing the park, running from Columbus Circle to Fifth Avenue. It is the most traditional luxury address in New York, and the one most likely to justify a splurge if the park is central to your trip.

What the premium buys

You are paying for the park across the road and, in the better rooms, a view over it. That view is the entire proposition, so a standard room facing the back of the building at a Central Park South rate is poor value. If you cannot afford the park-view category, you will usually do better a few blocks south for less money.

Quiet, and sometimes too quiet

This is a calm, expensive stretch that empties in the evening. There are few casual restaurants immediately to hand, and dinner usually means walking south into Midtown or west to Columbus Circle. That suits couples and older travellers; it is less lively than many people expect from a central New York address.

Excellent for the classic first-trip sights

Central Park, Fifth Avenue shopping, MoMA, Carnegie Hall and the Museum Mile are all walkable, and the theatres are about fifteen minutes on foot. For a trip built around the park and museums rather than Broadway, it is arguably the best base in the city.

Fast answers

Questions UK travellers ask about Central Park South.

Is a park-view room worth the money?

If it is the reason you chose the hotel, yes, but only in the categories that actually face north. Confirm the exact aspect when booking rather than assuming a Central Park South address means a Central Park view.

Is it too far from Broadway?

It is roughly a fifteen-minute walk to most theatres, which is fine before a show and manageable afterwards. If you are seeing several shows, staying nearer the theatres saves more than it costs.
