Transport is the whole point
Penn Station, Moynihan Train Hall and Madison Square Garden all sit at the western edge, with Herald Square immediately east. If you have tickets for an event at the Garden, or a train to Washington or Boston, staying here removes a great deal of friction.
Workaday streets, honest prices
This is still a working district of wholesalers, fabric shops and delivery vans, and it looks like one. There is not much charm at street level and it is not a destination for dinner. In exchange, you are five minutes from the Empire State Building and ten from Times Square, usually for noticeably less money.
Better than it used to be
Koreatown on 32nd Street is one of the best-value eating streets in Manhattan and runs late. Bryant Park is a short walk north, and Macy's at Herald Square is on the doorstep. The area rewards travellers who treat it as a base rather than a destination.

Fast answers
Questions UK travellers ask about Garment District.
Is the Garment District a safe area?
It is busy and well used through the day and evening, particularly around Herald Square and Penn Station. It is commercial rather than residential, so it feels emptier late at night than a neighbourhood like the Upper West Side.
Is it worth staying here to save money?
Often yes, if you accept that the streets are functional. You are within walking distance of the Empire State Building, Bryant Park, Macy's and the theatres, which is a lot of central New York for a lower rate.
