When an airport hotel is genuinely worth it
Four cases. A departure before about 8am, where the alternative is leaving Manhattan at 4am. A very late arrival with children or heavy luggage, when a 90-minute transfer is the last thing anyone needs. A long layover that is too short for the city and too long for the terminal. And a missed or rebooked connection, where you simply need a bed near the gate. Outside those, book in the city.
When it is a waste of a night
A standard evening arrival does not need one. Landing at JFK at 6pm and staying in Queens costs you a first night in New York to save an hour of travelling, and airport hotels are rarely cheaper than a comparable room in Manhattan once you add the transfer. If you are arriving at a civilised hour, go straight into the city.
JFK: AirTrain, and a hotel cluster in Jamaica
The JFK AirTrain costs $8.75 when you enter or exit at Jamaica or Howard Beach, before any subway or LIRR fare on top. Most JFK airport hotels sit around Jamaica rather than at the terminals, so check whether your hotel runs a free shuttle and how late it operates. A hotel a 20-minute shuttle ride from your terminal is not an airport hotel in any useful sense at 5am.
LaGuardia: there is no AirTrain, and the bus is free
This catches people out. The proposed AirTrain to LaGuardia was officially cancelled in March 2023, so any guide that mentions one is out of date. What you have instead is the Q70 LaGuardia Link bus, which is completely free in both directions. You pay only the $2.90 subway fare when you transfer at 74th Street-Roosevelt Avenue. It is genuinely quick, and it makes LaGuardia far less painful than its reputation suggests.
Newark: the most expensive transfer of the three
Newark's AirTrain is $8.50, and the full journey to Penn Station in Manhattan via NJ Transit comes to about $16.80. That is the priciest of the three airports on public transport, and worth factoring in when a Newark fare looks cheaper than a JFK one.
The better answer for an early flight: stay near the station
For a dawn departure, a Manhattan hotel beside the right transport hub usually beats an airport hotel. You keep your last evening in the city, and you are still on a direct route out. For Newark, that means the Penn Station area. For JFK, anywhere on the LIRR or the A. The hotels below are chosen on exactly that basis.
