What a New York hotel really costs in pounds

A hotel's headline rate is not the price you pay. Enter the nightly rate you see, and the calculator adds taxes, the city unit fee, any destination fee and your exchange rate. It does not use live prices. You type the rate in.

The calculator needs JavaScript. As a rule of thumb, add about 15% plus US$1.50 a night to the headline rate, then divide by the exchange rate.

This is an estimate from the figures you enter. Hotels set their own fees, and rules change, so the booking page's price breakdown is the final word. Our taxes and fees guide explains each charge, and the destination fees list shows which hotels mention one.

How much are hotel taxes in New York?

State and city sales tax and the city's hotel room occupancy tax apply, and widely cited guides put the combined rate at about 14.75%. New York City also charges a unit fee of US$1.50 per room per night. Always check the price breakdown on your booking page.

It depends on the hotel and how the fee is charged, so we cannot say for every case. The calculator lets you include or exclude tax on the fee. Check your booking page for the exact figure.

Which exchange rate should I use?

Use today's rate, and the rate your card or bank actually gives you. The default of 1.30 dollars to the pound is only an illustration. Many UK cards add a foreign transaction fee, which you can enter in the calculator.
