Where to Stay in the West Village

The West Village sits west of Sixth Avenue below 14th Street, where Manhattan's street grid breaks down entirely. It is the prettiest part of the island and the one place where you will genuinely get lost, which is most of the appeal.

The grid does not apply here

The streets predate the 1811 grid plan, so they bend and cross at odd angles. West 4th Street famously crosses West 10th, 11th and 12th. Do not rely on numbered streets to navigate, and expect your first walk back to the hotel to take longer than you planned.

Cultural weight in a small area

The Whitney Museum sits at the southern end of the High Line, Stonewall on Christopher Street is a National Monument, and the jazz clubs on Seventh Avenue South have been running for decades. Very little of it requires a subway journey.

Quiet, and priced accordingly

This is a residential neighbourhood of townhouses rather than towers, so there are few hotels and they are not cheap. The exception is the far west end towards the river, where one historic building offers some of the smallest and cheapest rooms in Manhattan.

Fast answers

Questions UK travellers ask about West Village.

What is the difference between Greenwich Village and the West Village?

The West Village is the western part of Greenwich Village, roughly west of Sixth Avenue. It is quieter, more residential and more expensive, with the crooked streets that break the grid.

Is it walkable to the main sights?

To the High Line, the Whitney, Chelsea Market and SoHo, easily. To Midtown, Central Park or the Empire State Building, take the subway.
