Where to Stay in Murray Hill

Murray Hill sits east of Fifth Avenue between roughly 34th and 40th Streets. It is residential, low-key and often overlooked, which is exactly why it can be good value for a central stay.

Quiet, central and unfashionable

This is a neighbourhood of brownstones and small apartment buildings rather than towers, and it stays quiet at night. You are ten minutes from Grand Central, ten from the Empire State Building and fifteen from Bryant Park, without paying a landmark premium.

The Morgan Library

The Morgan Library and Museum on Madison Avenue is the area's one great sight: J.P. Morgan's private library, kept as he left it, with a Gutenberg Bible and a remarkable manuscript collection. It is consistently one of the least crowded major museums in the city.

Not a destination for dinner

There are decent neighbourhood restaurants along Third Lexington and Third Avenues, but nobody travels here to eat. Koreatown on 32nd Street is the nearest real draw, and it is excellent.

Fast answers

Questions UK travellers ask about Murray Hill.

Is Murray Hill central enough?

Yes for most itineraries. It is a genuine walk to Grand Central, the Empire State Building and Bryant Park, and the subway covers the rest. It is simply quieter than the areas either side of it.

Why is it cheaper than nearby areas?

It has no headline attraction and little nightlife, so it attracts less leisure demand than Bryant Park or NoMad. For travellers who want to sleep and walk, that is a discount rather than a drawback.
