Before you book
Three places matter on race weekend.
The expo
You pick up your number in person in the days before the race. Recent years used the Javits Center on the far west side. Check the venue and opening days with NYRR.
The start
Runners travel to Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island on official transport that leaves early on race morning. A late-night hotel can make that early start harder.
The finish
You finish in Central Park, near Tavern on the Green. After 26.2 miles, how far you have to walk to your hotel matters more than you expect.
Where to stay
Pick the base that fits your race plan.
Near the finish
Central Park South, Columbus Circle and the Upper West Side. The best for the walk back. You will need the subway to Midtown first on race morning.
Midtown, by the buses
The official Midtown bus leaves from outside the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue. Hotels around Bryant Park keep race morning simple.
Downtown, by the ferry
The Staten Island Ferry leaves from Whitehall Terminal at the southern tip of Manhattan. Runners report a wait on Staten Island before the bus to the start.
Some guides advise against staying on Staten Island, because getting back after the finish is difficult. Official transport times and rules change each year, so check NYRR before you plan.

Booking
How to book marathon weekend sensibly.
- Book once you have an entry, and choose free cancellation if you can. Ballot results usually come out some months before the race.
- Compare the final price after taxes and hotel fees. Our taxes and fees guide explains what to look for.
- Plan your arrival. Allow a day or two before the race for jet lag, and see how many nights to stay.
- From the UK you need an approved ESTA before you fly. Read our ESTA guide.
Shake-out run
Stretch your legs before the race.
Most hotels here have a running guide with the nearest park or riverside path, water stops and a 5 km out-and-back from the front door. An easy shake-out the day before is a good use of it.
Questions
Marathon hotel questions.
When is the New York City Marathon?
It is run on the first Sunday of November. NYRR's countdown shows Sunday 7 November 2027 for the next race. Confirm the date on the NYRR website as it is announced.
Where does the New York Marathon start and finish?
It starts at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island and finishes in Central Park, near Tavern on the Green. Runners reach the start on official transport on race morning.
Is it better to stay near the start or the finish?
Most runners stay in Manhattan. Near the finish you can walk back after 26.2 miles. Near the Midtown bus pickup or the downtown ferry makes race morning simpler. Staying on Staten Island is usually discouraged, because getting back afterwards is difficult.
How do runners get to the start?
NYRR provides official transport to Fort Wadsworth: the Staten Island Ferry from Whitehall Terminal, a bus from Midtown (outside the New York Public Library), and a bus from New Jersey. Check NYRR for this year's pickup times and rules.
When should I book a hotel for marathon weekend?
Once you have an entry. Choose a rate with free cancellation if you can, because ballot results usually come out some months before the race and your plans may change. Always compare the final price after taxes and any hotel fees.
