Built around Grand Central
Grand Central Terminal anchors the whole area, and much of Midtown East was developed above the rail yards in the 1920s as Terminal City. That history is why several hotels here are handsome pre-war buildings, and why the transport links are so good.
Calm rather than lively
The area empties in the evening as the offices close. Streets are safe and pleasant but quiet, and dinner often means walking a few blocks or taking the subway. It suits travellers who value sleep and space over atmosphere, and it is a good fit for a longer stay.
Excellent walking access to the classics
Fifth Avenue shopping, Rockefeller Center, St Patrick's Cathedral, MoMA and the Chrysler Building are all within a comfortable walk, and Central Park is about fifteen minutes north. The theatres are a longer walk or a short subway ride west.

Fast answers
Questions UK travellers ask about Midtown East.
Is Midtown East too quiet for a first trip?
It depends what you want in the evening. The days are excellent because so much is walkable, but you will travel for dinner and drinks. First-timers who want energy outside the door usually prefer NoMad or the theatre district.
How useful is Grand Central really?
Very, if you are adding a trip out of the city or arriving by rail. It is also the fastest crosstown route to Times Square via the Shuttle, which takes two minutes and saves a fifteen-minute walk.
