Central for the things people actually visit
From the mid-50s you are a few minutes from MoMA, Rockefeller Center, Radio City and Fifth Avenue, with Central Park five blocks north and the Broadway theatres a walk south. Very little of a standard first-trip itinerary requires the subway from here.
The quiet is the point
These are commercial blocks that empty in the evening. That means no crowds outside your hotel at midnight, and it also means the street life is thin. If you want to fall out of the hotel into a bar, stay downtown; if you want to sleep, this is better than Times Square.
It covers a lot of ground, so check the cross street
Midtown West stretches from the low 40s to the high 50s, and the difference between them is significant. West 40th by the Port Authority is a very different proposition from West 55th near Carnegie Hall. Always map the exact address rather than trusting the area name.

Fast answers
Questions UK travellers ask about Midtown West.
Is Midtown West the same as Times Square?
No, though they overlap. Times Square sits at the southern end around 42nd to 47th. The blocks in the 50s are quieter, closer to Central Park and MoMA, and generally more pleasant to come back to at night.
Is it walkable to Central Park?
From the mid-50s, yes: five blocks or so to Central Park South, about ten minutes on foot. From the low 40s it is a longer walk and you would use the subway.
