The folk-music streets are still there
Bleecker and MacDougal were the centre of the early-1960s folk revival, and the addresses survive even where the clubs have changed hands. Bob Dylan's first New York years happened within a few streets of Washington Square, and several hotels here trade directly on that history.
It is the best base for walking
From Washington Square you can reach SoHo, the West Village, Union Square, Chelsea and the East Village on foot in fifteen minutes or less. For a second or third trip, when you already know the landmarks, that changes how a week in New York feels.
Rooms are small and the buildings are old
Most Village hotels occupy converted residential buildings from the early 1900s, so rooms are noticeably smaller than a Midtown equivalent at the same rate. That is the trade for staying somewhere with genuine character.

Fast answers
Questions UK travellers ask about Greenwich Village.
Is Greenwich Village good for a first New York trip?
It works better on a second. The area is wonderful for walking and eating, but you will travel to Midtown, Central Park and the main landmarks most days.
Is it expensive?
Mid to high, though less than Central Park South or Tribeca. A couple of the historic hotels around Washington Square are among the better-value character stays in Manhattan.
