Where to Stay in the Meatpacking District

The Meatpacking District is a small pocket of cobbled streets between the West Village and Chelsea, at the southern end of the High Line. It went from working meat market to nightlife district to fashion quarter within thirty years, and it is now one of the liveliest corners of downtown.

Compact and very walkable

The district itself is only a few blocks, but it sits at a useful junction: the West Village is immediately south, Chelsea north, and the High Line begins here at Gansevoort Street. The Whitney Museum of American Art sits at its edge, with terraces looking over the whole area.

Nights are loud

This is one of the busiest nightlife areas in Manhattan, particularly Thursday to Saturday. Cobbled streets carry noise, and taxi ranks and queues outside clubs run late. If you want an early night, choose your hotel and room aspect carefully.

A long way from Midtown

You are twenty-five minutes or more from Times Square and further from Central Park. For a first trip weighted towards the classic sights, that daily journey is the main argument against staying here.

Fast answers

Questions UK travellers ask about Meatpacking District.

How noisy is it at night?

Genuinely noisy at weekends. The combination of cobbles, late bars and taxi traffic carries, so ask for a room away from the street if you are a light sleeper.

Is it good for a first trip?

It is a strong second-trip base. First-timers who want Broadway, Central Park and the Empire State Building will spend a lot of time on the subway from here.
