Where to Stay in Tribeca

Tribeca takes its name from the Triangle Below Canal Street. It is a district of converted cast-iron warehouses and cobbled streets that became one of the most expensive residential neighbourhoods in New York, and it is noticeably quieter than anywhere else this far downtown.

Quiet is the product

Tribeca has no major tourist attraction of its own, which is precisely why people stay here. The streets are residential, the restaurants are excellent and the hotels are small and discreet. If you want to be left alone, this is where to do it.

Well placed for Lower Manhattan

The World Trade Center, the 9/11 Memorial, Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty ferries are all within walking distance or a couple of stops. SoHo begins immediately north, so shopping is a ten-minute walk.

The film connection is real

Robert De Niro has been central to the neighbourhood's identity since founding the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002, and he co-owns one of its hotels. The festival runs each spring and fills the area's rooms.

Fast answers

Questions UK travellers ask about Tribeca.

Is Tribeca worth it over SoHo?

For quiet and for restaurants, yes. SoHo is better if shopping is the point of the trip and you want more going on outside the door. The two are a ten-minute walk apart, so you get both either way.

When is the Tribeca Film Festival?

It runs each spring and fills hotels across the neighbourhood. If you are visiting then, book early; if you are not attending, expect higher rates and busier restaurants.
