Editorial take

Who should book Hyatt Grand Central New York?

If this is your first New York trip, shortlist Hyatt Grand Central New York for a practical reason: Grand Central and rail travel, transport convenience, business trips. The name, star rating and lobby photos matter, but the real test is whether the location helps your days feel easier.

It is less compelling if you want boutique character or a quiet neighbourhood. Before booking from the UK, compare the final price after taxes and property fees, check the exact room setup and make sure your airport arrival route is not needlessly awkward.

First-timer context

Why Hyatt Grand Central New York might feel special.

What it is known for

  • It opened on 28 January 1919 as the Commodore Hotel with 2,000 rooms, one of the largest hotels in the city.
  • Hyatt and the developer Donald Trump converted it into the 1,400-room Grand Hyatt New York between 1978 and 1980, in a deal central to the redevelopment of the area around Grand Central.
  • It reopened on 1 November 2021 under its current name after closing during the pandemic.

New York moments

  • The Commodore conversion was one of the defining New York property deals of the late 1970s and helped set the pattern for Midtown East's redevelopment.
  • The site is earmarked for 175 Park Avenue, a supertall office building designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, developed by RXR Realty and TF Cornerstone.

On screen

  • The building's place in New York history is commercial rather than cinematic, though its position beside Grand Central makes it a constant background presence.

Review questions

What travellers keep asking.

Is this hotel closing?

Eventually. The site is earmarked for the 175 Park Avenue tower, but as of 2026 the replacement's completion target had moved to around 2032, and the hotel is still trading. Check directly if you are booking a long way ahead.

How convenient is it for Grand Central?

It could hardly be more so: the hotel adjoins the terminal. That makes it exceptional for onward trains and for the rail link towards the airports.
