SIXTY LES

A rooftop-pool hotel on the Lower East Side with a good restaurant downstairs, let down slightly by a compulsory nightly fee.

Editorial take

Who should book SIXTY LES?

If this is your first New York trip, shortlist SIXTY LES for a practical reason: Rooftop pool, nightlife, food, couples. The name, star rating and lobby photos matter, but the real test is whether the location helps your days feel easier.

It is less compelling if you dislike compulsory fees, or want quiet nights. Before booking from the UK, compare the final price after taxes and property fees, check the exact room setup and make sure your airport arrival route is not needlessly awkward.

First-timer context

Why SIXTY LES might feel special.

What it is known for

  • The seasonal rooftop pool is heated and restricted to guests aged 21 and over, alongside Make Believe, the rooftop social club.
  • Rooms were designed by Jim Walrod and hang photography by Lee Friedlander, one of the defining American photographers of the twentieth century.
  • Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya occupies the ground floor, which is a serious restaurant rather than a hotel dining room.

New York moments

  • Jim Walrod was a self-taught New York designer known for his work with musicians and for shaping the look of several downtown hotels.

On screen

  • The rooftop is the hotel's public face rather than a filming location.

Review questions

What travellers keep asking.

What is the facility fee and do I have to pay it?

It is a compulsory nightly charge of around $40 plus tax, added on top of the room rate whether or not you use the pool, gym or bicycles. It is not a government tax, and it is exactly the kind of charge to check before comparing hotels on headline rate.

Is the rooftop pool worth it?

It is heated and seasonal, and restricted to over-21s, so it is not an option for families. For couples in summer it is one of the better hotel pools downtown.

Look beyond the nightly rate. Check taxes, destination fees, breakfast and cancellation.

Room layout

For New York, room size, bathroom privacy, bed type and storage can matter more than star rating.

Arrival route

Match the hotel to your airport, luggage and arrival time, especially after an overnight UK flight.
