Editorial take

Who should book The St. Regis New York?

If this is your first New York trip, shortlist The St. Regis New York for a practical reason: Classic luxury, special occasions, Fifth Avenue, hotel bars. The name, star rating and lobby photos matter, but the real test is whether the location helps your days feel easier.

It is less compelling if you want modern design, value or a downtown base. Before booking from the UK, compare the final price after taxes and property fees, check the exact room setup and make sure your airport arrival route is not needlessly awkward.

First-timer context

Why The St. Regis New York might feel special.

What it is known for

  • It opened on 4 September 1904, built for John Jacob Astor IV to designs by Trowbridge & Livingston, with an annex added in 1927 by Sloan & Robertson.
  • The King Cole Bar takes its name from Maxfield Parrish's mural of Old King Cole, which did not start life here: it originally hung in the Knickerbocker Hotel at Broadway and 42nd Street.
  • The hotel holds both a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating and an AAA Five Diamond award, which few properties manage.

New York moments

  • Astor was among the wealthiest men in America when he built it. He died in the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912, eight years after the hotel opened.
  • It is operated by Marriott and remains the flagship of the St. Regis brand worldwide.

On screen

  • The King Cole Bar is one of the most filmed and photographed hotel bars in New York.

Review questions

What travellers keep asking.

Where did the King Cole mural come from?

Maxfield Parrish painted it for the Knickerbocker Hotel at Broadway and 42nd Street, and it moved here later. Both hotels are covered on this site, which makes for an unusual pairing if you are interested in New York hotel history.

Is the St. Regis worth the rate?

It is one of only seven Forbes Five-Star hotels in the city and also holds AAA Five Diamond status, so the service standard is genuinely at the top of the market. Whether that justifies the price depends on how much of your trip is spent in the hotel.
