Editorial take
Who should book The Chatwal New York?
If this is your first New York trip, shortlist The Chatwal New York for a practical reason: Architecture, special occasions, theatre trips, couples. The name, star rating and lobby photos matter, but the real test is whether the location helps your days feel easier.
It is less compelling if you want certainty about what you are booking, or value. Before booking from the UK, compare the final price after taxes and property fees, check the exact room setup and make sure your airport arrival route is not needlessly awkward.

Hotel facts
What to know before booking.
First-timer context
Why The Chatwal New York might feel special.
What it is known for
- The building opened on 1 September 1905 as the clubhouse of the Lambs, a theatrical social club founded in 1874, designed by Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White.
- George Freeman designed the annex, completed in time for the club's 1916 season.
- The conversion into a hotel cost more than $100 million before it opened as The Chatwal in August 2010.
New York moments
- Stanford White was one of the most celebrated American architects of the Gilded Age, and this is one of the few White interiors the public can still book a room in.
- The Lambs occupied the building from 1905 until financial trouble forced its sale at auction in 1975.
On screen
- The building's fame rests on its architecture and its theatrical club history rather than on screen work.
Review questions
What travellers keep asking.
Is The Chatwal closing?
It is changing hands and name. The hotel exits the Hyatt system on 29 September 2026, and Minor Hotels plans to reopen the building as The Wolseley Hotel New York in early 2027. Treat any booking beyond autumn 2026 with caution and check the terms.
What is the Wolseley connection?
The Wolseley is the well-known London restaurant on Piccadilly. Minor Hotels is launching a hotel brand under that name, and this building will be its first, which is likely to interest British travellers who know the original.
