Editorial take

Who should book Soho Grand Hotel?

If this is your first New York trip, shortlist Soho Grand Hotel for a practical reason: Shopping, downtown exploring, repeat visitors. The name, star rating and lobby photos matter, but the real test is whether the location helps your days feel easier.

It is less compelling if your trip is built around midtown or central park. Before booking from the UK, compare the final price after taxes and property fees, check the exact room setup and make sure your airport arrival route is not needlessly awkward.

First-timer context

Why Soho Grand Hotel might feel special.

What it is known for

  • When it opened on 4 August 1996 it was the first hotel built in SoHo for more than a century, in a district that had been industrial and then residential lofts.
  • It is generally credited as Manhattan's first luxury downtown boutique hotel, a category that barely existed before it.
  • It has been owned and operated throughout by Leonard N. Stern of Hartz Mountain Industries, which is unusual continuity for a New York hotel.

New York moments

  • Its opening is often treated as the moment SoHo's transformation from artists' quarter to shopping district became irreversible.

On screen

  • The hotel has been a fixture of downtown New York life since the late 1990s rather than a filming location.

Review questions

What travellers keep asking.

Was this really SoHo's first hotel?

It was the first built in SoHo in over a century when it opened in August 1996. The Mercer followed in 1997 and is usually described as SoHo's first five-star hotel, which is where the competing claims come from.

Is the southern end of SoHo a good base?

Yes if you want downtown. You are walkable to Tribeca, Chinatown and the West Village, though Canal Street is busy and loud during the day.
