Editorial take
Who should book Hyatt Regency Times Square?
If this is your first New York trip, shortlist Hyatt Regency Times Square for a practical reason: First trips, Broadway, large hotels with predictable standards. The name, star rating and lobby photos matter, but the real test is whether the location helps your days feel easier.
It is less compelling if you want boutique character, quiet streets or a small-hotel feel. Before booking from the UK, compare the final price after taxes and property fees, check the exact room setup and make sure your airport arrival route is not needlessly awkward.

First-timer context
Why Hyatt Regency Times Square might feel special.
What it is known for
- If you are searching for the Crowne Plaza Times Square, this is the same building: it closed in early 2025 and reopened on 15 July 2025 as the Hyatt Regency Times Square.
- It was designed by Alan J. Lapidus, son of the Miami modernist Morris Lapidus, and opened on 1 December 1989.
- The Broadway frontage carries a 100-foot granite arch, built to satisfy city rules requiring deep setbacks at the base alongside large illuminated signs.
New York moments
- Developer William Zeckendorf Jr bought the site in 1985 and cleared it in October 1986, demolishing the Pussycat Cinema as part of the clean-up that reshaped Times Square.
- The hotel closed during the pandemic in 2020, reopened in November 2022, filed for bankruptcy that December and closed again in January 2025 before the Hyatt relaunch.
On screen
- The building's story is about the commercial rebuilding of Times Square in the late 1980s rather than about film.
Review questions
What travellers keep asking.
Is this the old Crowne Plaza Times Square?
Yes. The same building at 1605 Broadway traded as the Crowne Plaza until it closed in early 2025, and it reopened on 15 July 2025 as the Hyatt Regency Times Square.
Should I trust older reviews of this hotel?
Treat anything written before July 2025 with caution, because it describes a different operator. Filter to the most recent reviews before judging current standards.
